Abstract:
The study aimed to investigate the role of the secondary schools in developing environmental citizenship among students, and to explore the obstacles that may have confined the schools' role. The study adopted qualitative approach, and used interviews for the data collection. The sample size of the study consisted of 13 teachers.
Several findings drawn from the analysis. It appeared that the school has a role in developing responsibility environmental, justice environmental and participation environmental among students. This role, however, often depends on individual or personal efforts of teachers. The results also indicated that, the lack of financial support, the lack of environmental citizenship activities, and the weak motivation of students toward environmental citizenship, appeared the most significant obstacles, which need to be solved in order to improve the role of the school in developing environmental citizenship among students. Therefore, the study suggested some recommendations to improve the role of the school. It recommended creating clear plans and goals that can be implemented and evaluated; providing the school with necessary financial support; increasing environmental citizenship activities, and motivating the school's administration and teachers to participate in the activities in order to raise the students' awareness of environmental citizenship importance.
