In 1803, the USA signed The Louisiana Purchase Treaty; a treaty with France upon which USA purchased Louisiana territory. The boundaries of the said territory have not been precisely set at that time. The USA assumed that Florida, or at least West Florida, is part of Louisiana. However, Spain rejected this view and insisted that Florida is not part of Louisiana. Given the importance of Florida for the USA, the USA made diplomatic efforts to purchase Florida from Spain along the period from 1804 to 1810. These efforts have achieved no successes because Spain insisted on maintaining Florida. USA, however, seized the opportunity which presented itself upon the Napoleon’s invasion of Spain in 1808 and its following consequences. Accordingly, the USA annexed West Florida in 1810. Then, in 1818, USA launched a military expedition to invade East Florida. And in 1819, the conflict between USA and Spain was settled by signing The Adams–Onís Treaty of 1819. The aforementioned treaty stipulated a provision that Spain shall cede the territory to the United States.
This study tackles the diplomatic and military consequences and attempts made by the USA along this period to annex Florida till the signing of The Adams–Onís Treaty, upon which Spain ceded whole Florida to the USA.
