This study aimed to identify the functional role of Saudi universities in implementing the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030. The study was structured into three main sections: the first section addressed the role of Saudi universities in education; the second focused on their role in scientific research; and the third explored their role in community service. The researcher employed a descriptive approach in this study. The results of the research revealed that there is a clear variation in the goals that each university seeks to achieve. However, there is a commonality in the primary objectives through which universities perform their functional roles in the areas of teaching, scientific research, and community service. There is an urgent need for Saudi universities to revise and realign their vision, mission, and objectives in light of Vision 2030, as most Saudi universities formulated their vision and goals prior to the development of the ambitious Vision 2030. Vision 2030 contributes to enhancing university education outcomes by ensuring that they align with the practical steps needed to meet the demands of the labor market.
Key Recommendations:
- Universities should align the disciplines they offer with the needs of the labor market, eliminating any programs that are redundant and adding new ones that cater to market demands.
- Increase the allocation of funding for scientific research within university budgets and establish national research programs to be implemented by each university, based on agreed-upon timeframes and in collaboration with community stakeholders.
- Saudi universities must work towards achieving leadership in community service and strive to become major institutions that adopt knowledge economies and invest in human capital.
