The degree of contribution of extra-curricular activities in reducing school bullying from the viewpoint of secondary school students in Madinah Munawarah

Abstract

The study aimed to reveal the degree to which the extra-curricular activities contribute to reducing school bullying from the point of view of secondary school students in Madinah, and the study adopted the descriptive survey method. The researcher prepared a questionnaire that included three domains, which are the development domain, the preventive domain, and the therapeutic domain. The questionnaire was applied to a simple random sample of (599) students during the academic year 1444 AH. The results showed the contribution of extra-curricular activities in reducing school bullying from the point of view of secondary school students in Madinah to a mild degree, with an arithmetic mean (3.21). The development domain came at the forefront of the achieved domains, with an arithmetic mean of (3.26), followed by the preventive domain, with an arithmetic mean of (3.20). While the curative domain came as the least achieved domain, with an arithmetic mean of (3.18). The biggest contribution to the development domain has been the interest of extra-curricular activities in building a positive social culture among students. While the least of them is the provision of extra-curricular activities, a fertile field for joint group work among students. The biggest aspect of the contribution in the preventive domain was represented in encouraging students to stay away from bad companions and pointing out the disadvantages of their association. While the least of them is considering extra-curricular activities, holding lectures and seminars in the school to raise awareness of the negative effects of school bullying. The biggest aspect of the contribution in the therapeutic domain was represented in clarifying the extra-curricular activities for the student who was targeted by bullying and the necessary procedures that preserve his right. While the least of them was represented by the pioneers of the activity recording data on cases of school bullying and following up on affected students. It also showed that there were statistically significant differences at the significance level (0.05) in the degree of contribution of extra-curricular activities in reducing school bullying from the point of view of secondary school students in Madinah, due to the difference in the academic grade, in the favor of first and second grade students, while there were not statistically significant differences due to type of school building.
