Self-concept and its Relationship to Behavioral and Family Problems among a Sample of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate the relationship between
self-concept and some behavioral and family problems among a sample
of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The sample comprised
80 children who were administered the researcher's self-concept scale,
Al-Aqr and Al-Habshi's (2017) Behavioral Style Scale, Bazzah's (2003)
Aggression Scale, Taylor's Anxiety Scale translated by Fahmi and Gali
(1990), and Beck's Depression Scale translated by Gharib (2000). The
results indicated that the level of self-concept among children with ASD
was low, and there was a positive correlation between self-concept and
both behavioral style and aggression among children with ASD. In
addition, there was a negative correlation between self-concept and both
family anxiety and depression as perceived by children with ASD.
Results also showed no differences between males and females in selfconcept and its dimensions. The study discussed the results and proposed
some recommendations for future research.
