Primary Grade Female Teachers’ Perceptions about the Role of Diglossia in Children’s Language Acquisition.

Abstract

The current study aimed to identify primary-grade female teachers' perceptions about the role of diglossia in children’s language. The study relied on the descriptive approach, where the researcher prepared a questionnaire applied to a sample of primary-grade teachers in public schools, with a total number of (349) teachers. The study came up with several findings including: a number of primary-grade teachers disagreed with the role of diglossia in children’s language acquisition in terms of speaking skills, which is represented in the fact that the child prefers to use the standard Arabic to introduce himself, and the child’s differentiation in speaking between the standard Arabic and the colloquial dialect. The study also found that some primary-grade teachers agree with the role of diglossia in children’s acquisition of language in terms of writing skills.
